Before You Start

Measure the oats and water, rinse the berries, and set the cinnamon within reach.

How To Make It
  1. Add the rolled oats and about two cups of water to a small pot and bring to a gentle simmer over medium high heat, 2 to 3 minutes, until the surface bubbles at the edges.
  2. Lower the heat and cook, stirring often, 5 to 7 minutes, until the oats are soft and creamy.
  3. Stir in the cinnamon off the heat so it blooms without turning bitter.
  4. Top with the mixed berries and the basil, and serve warm.
Fix It: If it turns stiff and gluey, loosen it with a splash of hot water; oats keep drinking up liquid as they sit.
Microwave
  1. Add the ingredients you would cook together to a microwave safe bowl along with their liquid.
  2. Cover loosely and microwave in one minute bursts, stirring between each, until hot through.
  3. Let it stand for a minute, then finish and plate the dish as written in the steps above.
